Pope County Deputy Josh Owen, was on duty during his 44th birthday when he was shot and killed. Deputy Owen was taken to Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood in critical condition after being shot. Owen had been with the department for nearly 12 years. His K9 Karma was not injured. The other Pope County deputy wounded by gunfire was identified as Deputy Brody Merrill, Owen’s partner. The incident happened after the officers responded to a domestic call at around 7:30 p.m. on the 400 block of Stromen Street in Cyrus. There was an exchange of gunfire between officers and a man at the home during an attempted arrest. The man opened fire on the officers and Deputy Owen was struck and killed. Deputy Owen was honored in 2022 with a distinguished service award after helping to rescue a neighbor from a burning home on 11/25/22. Deputy Owen also served in the U.S. Military. He leaves behind his wife Shannon and a 10-year old son named Rylan.
