George K. Carlson Jr., of Kingston, New York died on 9/2/23 following a long battle with Alzheimers. He served in the United States Army and graduated from Ulster County Community College Law Enforcement Class of 1974. In 1974, he began his forty plus year career in law enforcement with the Kingston Police Department assigned to the SWAT Team, SCUBA and as a Firearms Instructor. In 1980 under Mayor Don Quick and Police Chief Julius Glassman. George introduced the K9 Unit to the police department. He would serve with two K9 partners, Stoner and Cody before being promoted to detective and retiring. In 2004, George would continue his law enforcement career with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office as a K9 deputy with his dog Cody. Following Cody, his next partner would be Griff, a patrol and cadaver dog and then Coda. He became a K9 instructor for the Sheriff’s Office and in 2018 he retired. Finishing his law enforcement career with his dog Coda, George served as a K9 Security Officer at Ulster County Community College. He was a member and judge for the United States Police Canine Association. George is survived by his wife of forty eight years, Veronica “Vickie” Carlson.
