Hooks had been an award-winning member of K-9 teams since his days with the North Sioux City Police Department. In 2000 he was on a team that won first place in the United States Police Canine Association’s annual narcotic certification trials. In 2005 Hooks was a member of the Sioux City Police Department’s K9 team that took first place at a regional competition in the United States Police Canine Association’s detector dog trials.
